Don't Touch the Stove...It's Too Hot

The clear winner from this year's baseball free agency is: The Agents. The dearth of actual talent has led GMs to overreach and overpay for whatever they can get. The Blue Jays just signed A.J. Burnett to a 5 year, $55 million contract. This is just after signing B.J. Ryan to a 5 year, $47 million contract. I'm really hoping that the Blue Jays corner the market on x.J. players and sign C.J. Nitkowski to a 5 year, $35 million contract. So far, the Blue Jays have committed $100 million for a starter that will win 12-15 games a year, and a slightly above average closer. Where was this money when Carlos Delgado was a free agent?Unless they've found a way to be transferred to the NL West, I don't see how this gets them any closer to winning the division.

When Carlos Delgado was a free agent the money was still tied up in the Rogers corporation. This year the Jays' budget is $25 million higher than it was last year os J.P. is going spend-crazy. I don't think its over by a long shot either. They've still got about 5 mill to drop on someone and some players that could be moved.

As a Toronto native its nice to see the Jays at least taking a shot at being competitive.

I can see why it would seem like a sign of hope for Blue Jays fans that their team is willing to spend to be competitive. I'm just not sold on AJ and BJ being the guys to do that. I hope I'm wrong tho, as I'd love to see someone other than the Red Sox and Yankees atop the East.

It's similar to the Atlanta Hawks this past summer. They desperately wanted to make a splash in the free agent market, but there really wasn't that much talent out there. So they reached and overpaid Joe Johnson in a sign-and-trade. They ended up only meeting half of their goal. They substantially increased their payroll, but they forgot to make their team that much better.
