God Tears Drew Brees Labrum

He does work in mysterious ways...

In the 2nd quarter of Saturday's meaningless game against the Broncos- a game in which Philip Rivers should have been the QB anyway- Drew Brees injured his throwing shoulder while in a pileup for a fumble. He's been diagnosed with a torn labrum that will require surgery and is consulting with Dr. James Andrews in Alabama for the procedure. Although the decision to have Brees playing in the game belonged to Marty Schottenheimer, Brees feels it was a higher power that put him in this precarious spot:

"I'm of the mind-set, 'OK, this looks bad. But why is this happening? What has God got in store for me? Of all the times for this to happen – with the contract and the last game of the year – why now?' " Brees said. "Well, it's because He knows I'm going to come back and I'm going to be a better football player next season."

Hopefully for Brees' sake, there are a lot of born-again general managers in the NFL, because this could be a financial disaster for Brees. Prior to the injury, the Chargers were probably inclined to putting a franchise tag on Brees while possibly negotiating a long-term deal with him. Now, Brees is most likely looking at a one year deal and will be looking over his shoulder at Rivers for another year yet again. The only thing in Brees' favor is there are a lot of teams that are desperate for a starting QB, so perhaps some GM will come to San Diego with a trade offer and he can work out a long term contract with another organization. In either event, Brees walking off the field holding his arm in an imaginary sling might be the last image of Drew in a Chargers uniform.

I though only girls had labrums! What was happening underneath that pileup? Makes a smack on the butt after a touchdown seem rather tame by comparison.

I knew a girl in middle school who had a similar injury after landing on her bicycle seat too hard. Didn't tear her labrum, but she did miss school that day and had an attitude ever since.
